Mac and cheese is perfect for all kinds of occasions. You can keep it simple or jazz it up as much as you can, by including exciting ingredients like crab, lobster or even using unusual types of cheese.

The following recipe is for crockpot mac and cheese, and being able to make it in a slow cooker means you can prepare it ahead and then just forget all about it until it’s dinner time!

Everyone loves macaroni cheese and there are plenty of ways to make it. You can get it frozen or canned, or even rustle up your own from scratch in mere minutes. This recipe is a little different though, since it’s prepared in a crockpot. Once you’ve cooked the pasta to al dente (cooked but with a little bit of “bite” left) you just have to combine it with the other ingredients in a slow cooker and flip that “on” switch!

Mac and cheese is a popular dish at Italian restaurants and it makes a great side dish alongside any kind of meat, poultry or even fish. This recipe is even more spectacular because it’s made in the crockpot. The slow cooking really makes the flavors meld and “pop” and this is a gourmet take on the classic mac and cheese dish we all know and love.

Why You’ll Love the Recipe:
Mac and cheese recipes vary but this is one of the simplest ones as well as one of the most tasty. The slow cooking process means this comes out full-flavored and delicious. The onion powder, mustard and 2 types of cheese help make it really special, and the chicken soup and sour cream are amazing in this too.
How to Serve It:
A great mac and cheese sets off any meal to perfection. Try this alongside seafood, chicken, steak, or even as part of a buffet. In fact, if you’re making it as part of a buffet spread, you can take the lid off the slow cooker, leave it plugged in and serve it right from there so it stays warm!

Can You Make It Ahead?
Yes, and if it’s ready too early you can simply use the “keep warm” setting on your slow cooker. You don’t get that useful option if you prep your macaroni cheese on the stove!
Storage Instructions:
Leftovers should be kept refrigerated in an airtight container. Eat them within 3 days. To reheat, a minute or so in the microwave works well.
Variations and Substitutions:
You can use different kinds of cheese here if you want, swap the onion powder for minced yellow or green onions, omit the mustard powder (or use prepared mustard) or even swap the elbow macaroni for another pasta shape. Of course that wouldn’t be so authentic, but it’s your recipe so you can make it as you please.
