Sweet onions are paired with eggs, cheese, milk, and crushed Ritz crackers. And then, if that wasn’t already delicious-sounding enough, the recipe is finished off with a buttery Ritz cracker crumb topping.

A sweet onion casserole is a versatile side dish. You can serve it alongside pretty much any kind of meat, poultry or fish. The sweet flavor of the onions is enhanced by the creamy butter and cheese, along with the salty, crispy Ritz cracker crumbs, to make a mouthwatering sweet onion side dish nobody is going to forget. Vidalia onions are a popular sweet onion variety but you can choose from other varieties.

You could also use regular onions, perhaps adding a pinch of sugar to ramp up the sweetness.

How to make Southern Sweet Onion Casserole:

Heat the oven to 375 degrees. 

Add the onions to a pot, and cover in water. 

Bring the water to a boil, and simmer the onions until softened about 8 minutes. 

Drain the onions and stir in the butter while they are still hot. 

Beat the eggs in a large mixing bowl. 

Add the onions, milk, cheese, Ritz crackers, and salt and pepper to taste to the bowl with the eggs, and stir to combine well. 

Spread the mixture into a well-greased 9×13 baking dish. 

In a bowl, stir together the topping ingredients, and sprinkle over the casserole. 

Bake for 45 minutes, and allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. 

This sweet onion side dish offers so much in the way of flavor. It’s creamy, cheesy, and crispy with Ritz cracker crumbs on top.

  • 1 C. Ritz crackers crushed
  • 4 Sweet onions sliced
  • 1 ½ C. Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. Butter
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 3 Large eggs
  • ¼ tsp. Pepper
  • 5 oz. Can evaporated milk

Can You Make It Ahead?

You can prepare the casserole ahead if you want to, then keep it refrigerated and bake it later.

Storage Instructions:

Leftovers will keep for up to 3 days and can be zapped in the microwave to reheat.

Variations and Substitutions:

Use another variety of onions if you want. Yellow ones will work if you don’t like them or can’t find sweet ones.
