Ingredients

  • 2 sticks cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces evaporated milk
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar to serve
  • Peanut oil vegetable oil or similar, for frying

Method

  1. Put the flour in a bowl and stir in the salt.
  2. Use a pastry cutter or large fork to cut in the butter until the mixture is sand-like and crumbly.
  3. Beat the egg yolks in a different bowl until they are foamy.
  4. Add the vanilla and milk to the flour.
  5. Add the egg mixture to the flour.
  6. Stir until you get a dough.
  7. Lightly flour your work surface then turn out the dough and knead it for 30 seconds.
  8. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces.
  9. Roll each piece into a rectangle, ¼-inch thick.
  10. Now cut the rectangles into 1½-inch strips.
  11. Cut a 2-inch slit down the center of each strip then pull one end through the hole so you end up with a bow shape.
  12. Heat a couple of inches of oil in a deep frying pan, then fry the dough bows in batches until golden.
  13. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate and allow to cool.
  14. Dust them with powdered sugar just before serving.
