Boston Brown Bread

This no-nonsense bread recipe is surprisingly simple compared to similar ones. You just have to mix the ingredients together, put the dough in a loaf pan and then put the whole thing in the oven and wait. Oh, and it tastes pretty amazing as well!

Ingredients
  

  • ½ C. Molasses
  • 2 ½ C. Wheat flour
  • 2 ½ tsp. Baking soda
  • 2 C. Buttermilk
  • 1 Large egg
  • ½ C. All purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. Baking powder
  • 1 C. Raisins
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • ½ C. Sugar
  • 1 C. Boiling water
  • Butter for garnish

Method
 

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Soak the raisins in boiling water for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the wheat flour, all purpose flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl.
  4. Blend the egg into the dry ingredients.
  5. Place the molasses, buttermilk and baking soda into a separate bowl, and whisk to combine well.
  6. Mix together the flour mixture with the wet ingredients.
  7. Spread the mixture into a well greased loaf pan.
  8. Place the loaf pan into the preheated oven and cover with a baking sheet to keep the bread from rising to high.
  9. Bake for 50 minutes.
  10. Remove the baking sheet from the top of the loaf pan, and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  11. Take the loaf out of the pan carefully and place on a wire rack to cool before serving.
