Cheeseburger Sub Sandwiches

You can’t go wrong with tasty homemade cheeseburgers and this recipe is extra-special because it uses sub rolls in place of the more commonly used hamburger buns.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 sub buns
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion
  • pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • ½ cup water
  • Sliced tomatoes and shredded iceberg lettuce optional

For the Sauce:

  • ¼ cup sweet relish
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • Stir the mustard, relish and mayonnaise together.
  • Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Heat some oil in a skillet and add the beef.
  • Cook it, breaking it up with a wooden spoon.
  • Add the onions and, once everything is cooked, drain the excess grease.
  • Mix in the salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.
  • Add the water and cook until all the water is gone.
  • Take the mixture off the heat.
  • Use parchment paper to line a baking sheet.
  • Cut the sub rolls open and put them on the baking sheet.
  • Spread the sauce on top then add the ground beef mixture on the bottoms.
  • Add cheddar cheese on top of the beef.
  • Put the bun tops back on.
  • Bake for 6 minutes or until the cheese melts.
  • Open and add lettuce and tomato slices if desired.
  • Close back up and serve.
