Classic Creamed Pearl Onions

Although this recipe is special enough for Thanksgiving or Christmas fare, it’s easy enough to rustle up whenever you’re looking for a creamy side to go with meat or chicken. Everything about the recipe is wonderful, from the sweet, juicy little onions to the thick, bubbling creamy sauce, and the warm nutmeg which is a perfect touch. This easy onion recipe is just as delicious served at a buffet or potluck as it is during the holidays.

Ingredients
  

  • 24 oz. Frozen pearl onions
  • ¾ C. Heavy whipping cream
  • 3 Tbsp. Butter
  • ¼ tsp. Nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp. Flour
  • ½ C. Grated parmesan cheese divided
  • ¾ C. Vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • Boil the onions in a pot of water for 6-8 minutes and drain well.
  • In a separate pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Stir in the flour, and cook for 1 minute, stirring often.
  • Slowly whisk the broth and heavy whipping cream in the skillet.
  • Stir in the nutmeg, ¼ cup of the parmesan cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the onions into the sauce mixture.
  • Spread the mixture into a well greased 9x9 baking dish, and top with the remaining cheese.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes.
